Deggendorf to Passau

We made it!  On Tuesday about 2 PM, 5 travelers arrived in Passau, Germany (on the boarder of Austria).  We completed the 26 stage journey of 1167 miles and 28,225 feet of climbing, crossing France and Germany and a part of Switzerland.

Congratulations to Julie, Lori and Beth in completing this epic journey.

Regensburg to Deggendorf

We had a fun ride along the Danube today.  We were pushed by 15 mph tailwinds and harassed by a nasty looking sky and construction along the trail, but we arrived at our destination for early check-in.

We left the UNESCO city of Regensburg and arrived in the charming city of Deggendorf.

Ingolstadt to Regensburg

This is my only picture of the day.   I felt like a wet duck rather than a beautiful swan for most of the day.

It was cold and rainy today.   We kept cycling today to avoid hypothermia (seriously, it was about 40 degrees, light rain and a significant (tail) wind.

Rest Day

On Saturday, we had a rest day.  It is probably best to call it a non-cycling day, because we were very busy.  We were in Ingolstadt, in Bavaria.  It was an cold day, with periodic rain showers.  We caught a train to Munich, 45 minutes away.

Our activities were very different from each other, so I put them in two different posts that were blogged on the train shortly after they occured.

Octoberfest 2022

Because of Covid 19, Octoberfest has not been held for 2 years.  As luck would have it, we got to Munich on the first day of the 2022 Octoberfest.

As all good Wisconsinites, that was our destination for the afternoon.  We got there as the early drunks were leaving and the mid-day soon to be drunks were arriving.

For us it seemed to be Summerfest and Wisconsin State Fair on steroids.  We ended up in the Hoffbrau House tent, with liters of beer in our hands.  We were surrounded by people from all over the world, drinking beer, enjoying the music and people watching.   All I can say is what a hoot.

What a crazy time and fun experience.  It just goes to prove that you never know what to expect when touring by bicycle.

 

Dachau

We took some time off out from our rest day to do some serious learning.  Today's activity was a guided tour of the Dachau Memorial Site.  I took very few pictures out of respect for what occurred there only 80 years ago.  

What we learned from our guide was that the the purpose of the memorial was to "honor the dead and remind the living."   Several of us had been there before, but it was much more memorable with our outstanding guide.  It was certainly an experience that we will never forget.  It is important for all of us to realize that it could happen again.   

Donauwörth to Ingolstadt

We cycled 38 miles today.  The roads were nice and not a lot of hills, but we did have rain.  For most of the ride, our cell phone stayed in dry in our handlebar bags, hence very few pictures.

We arrived in our apartment for the night pretty early and derived a lot of pleasure cleaning up our bikes.   Tomorrow is a rest day.  We are going to head to Munich for a little sightseeing.
